Golf Cart Speed Limit : How Fast Can You Go?

Shopping for a golf cart in Southern California? The speed limit depends on whether you own a standard golf cart or a low-speed vehicle (LSV).
Golf Cart Speed Limit
Under California Vehicle Code § 345, a golf cart travels up to about 15 mph. State law also bars golf carts from public roads unless the speed zone is 25 mph or less, with exceptions for areas your city has designated.
Golf Cart vs. LSV
• Golf cart: up to 15 – 19 mph roads or less, where your city allows it
• LSV: 20 to 25 mph, roads up to 35 mph, DMV registration, license plates, and insurance required
Can I Make My Golf Cart Faster?
Be careful. A cart modified to exceed 15 mph or seat more than two people is treated as a regular motor vehicle and cannot be converted into an LSV. For more speed on public streets, choose a factory-built, street-legal LSV.
Check Your City’s Rules
Many California cities allow golf carts only on designated roads, and some allow none. Check your local ordinance before you drive.
