How Fast Do Golf Carts Go? A San Diego Guide to PTVs and LSVs

Rear three-quarter view of a silver 2026 DENAGO ROVER XL listed in Coastal Carts San Diego inventory

There is no single speed for every vehicle called a golf cart. Club Car lists its standard ONWARD 2 Passenger at up to 19 mph, while its street-legal LSV models reach up to 25 mph. Those labels describe different vehicles, not simply two settings on the same cart.

If you are shopping in San Diego, Coronado, Point Loma or Chula Vista, speed is a useful opening question. The next question is more valuable: will this cart suit the places I plan to use it?

The appeal of a neighborhood ride is easy to understand. You are closer to the surroundings, a short outing feels less hurried and the vehicle can become part of your routine. Choosing the correct category helps make that experience practical.

Compare three terms before comparing numbers

Term What the speed information tells you
California statutory golf cart DMV's narrow definition includes a maximum of 15 mph and no more than two occupants, including the driver.
Personal transportation vehicle or PTV Check the specific model. Standard CLUB CAR ONWARD examples are rated up to 19 mph. PTV is not a blanket public-road permission.
Certified low-speed vehicle or LSV The federal category has a speed band above 20 mph and no more than 25 mph, along with other requirements.

See California DMV's golf-cart guidance, Club Car's ONWARD model page and CHP's LSV guidance.

A manufacturer's use of ‘golf cart’ in a model name does not mean it fits California's narrow legal definition. Read the classification and certification for the exact vehicle.

A 35 mph road does not mean a 35 mph LSV

California DMV explains that NEVs and LSVs have a maximum speed of 25 mph and are restricted from roads with posted limits above 35 mph. The roadway's posted limit and the vehicle's maximum speed are different numbers. Read DMV's road guidance.

Check the complete route, local restrictions and permitted crossings before planning trips. Neither this guide nor a vehicle advertisement establishes that a particular San Diego-area street, path, park or community permits your cart.

Test the experience you actually want

Ask for an appropriate test drive with the passenger configuration you expect to use. Pay attention to smooth starts, seating comfort, visibility and how easily everyone gets aboard. Discuss your terrain and intended use with the team.

Top-speed specifications do not answer every ownership question. Ask about the selected model's battery capacity, charging instructions, storage requirements and warranty. Confirm any advertised range against the manufacturer's conditions and your expected use rather than treating it as a guaranteed distance.

Do not shop around a promised speed modification

A faster setting does not establish street legality. In California, CHP guidance says an LSV must have the required manufacturer certification; fitting lights or increasing a golf cart's speed does not by itself create that status. Choose the appropriate vehicle classification at the start.

Is a 19 mph cart automatically legal on a residential street?

No. Confirm its classification and the local rules. A quiet residential setting does not by itself authorize PTV operation.

Should I buy the fastest available cart?

Choose the vehicle that fits your permitted use, passenger needs and ownership plan. The useful test is whether it works for your routine.
