Used Golf Cart: What to Check Before You Buy

A pre-owned golf cart can be a smart way to get on the road for less. But two carts that look alike can be very different underneath. This checklist covers what to look at, what to ask, and when to walk away.

Why buy pre-owned?

  • Lower upfront cost than a new cart
  • Proven models with a track record you can research
  • Wide selection of brands, sizes, and styles
  • Easier on the budget if you’re adding a second cart for guests or family

Start with the battery

The battery is the most important (and often most expensive) part of a used cart. Ask these questions:

  • What type is it? Lead-acid or lithium? Our lithium vs. lead-acid guide explains the differences.
  • How old is it? Older lead-acid batteries lose capacity and may need replacing soon.
  • How does it hold a charge? Ask for a battery test, or ask to see how the cart performs on a full charge.
  • Does it have a lithium conversion? If so, ask who did the work and whether it’s covered by a warranty.

If the battery is near the end of its life, factor a replacement into your decision.

Walk-around inspection

Take your time and look closely.

Body and frame

  • Cracks, dents, or heavy rust, especially under the cart
  • Panels and seats that fit well and aren’t loose

Tires and wheels

  • Even wear and no cuts, bulges, or dry rot
  • Wheels that spin true with no wobble

Seats and seatbelts

  • Tears, sun damage, or loose mounting
  • Seatbelts that buckle and release properly (important for street-legal carts)

Wiring and connections

  • Clean, tight terminals with no corrosion
  • No frayed, melted, or taped-up wiring

Take a test ride

A short drive tells you a lot. Pay attention to:

  • Acceleration: smooth, not jerky or hesitant
  • Brakes: firm and quiet, stopping in a straight line
  • Steering: no looseness, pulling, or odd noises
  • Noise: grinding, clicking, or whining from the motor or axle

Drive it on both flat ground and a slope if you can.

Street legal? Verify it

If you plan to drive on public roads, confirm the cart actually meets requirements. Not every used cart is street legal, and some “street-legal” kits are incomplete.

Buying from a dealer vs. a private seller

A private sale may look cheaper, but you’re on your own if something goes wrong. A dealer inspects carts, handles paperwork, and can offer service afterward. At Coastal Carts RMV, our pre-owned carts come with the support of our service team, and you can ask about financing or a trade-in.
